Female Hair Loss in Panama: Diagnosis & Treatment
In most cases, female alopecia can be treated by a physician or a certified hair restoration specialist. At DHI Panama, we identify the cause, measure the stage, and build a medical plan for natural-looking density and long-term results.
Female Pattern Hair Loss: A Complex but Treatable Condition
For many women, hair loss can feel truly discouraging. In Panama, female hair loss does not only occur after menopause; it can also be associated with pregnancy or medical conditions that impact hair growth.
In women—just like in men—the most common cause is androgenetic alopecia (female pattern hair loss). However, it develops and progresses differently, which is why we use a dedicated staging system: the Ludwig Scale.
Understand Your Progress: The Ludwig Scale
We use the specialized Ludwig Scale to assess the stage of female hair loss and determine the most effective medical path forward.
Stage I: Early Thinning & Medical Support
Early, diffuse thinning—typically most noticeable on the top of the scalp. At this stage, follicles are often still active but may be miniaturizing.

Stage II: Noticeable Rarefaction & Diagnostic Clarity
Visible thinning on the crown with a widening part. We prioritize diagnostic precision and stronger medical protocols to slow progression and improve density.
- check_circleTrichoscopy + densitometry screening
- check_circleLab review (when indicated) to rule out contributors

Stage III: Advanced Thinning & Combined Strategies
Extensive diffuse thinning with marked scalp visibility. We evaluate candidacy for procedural and surgical approaches, often combined with medical support for the most natural, durable restoration.

Why Female Hair Loss Happens
Female hair loss is multifactorial. Identifying the cause is the first step toward successful treatment.
Age-Related Changes
A certain amount of thinning is natural as we age—both in women and men—due to changes in the hair cycle and follicle behavior.
Hormonal Shifts
Hormonal changes—especially around menopause—can increase the likelihood of thinning. Changes in androgen levels (including DHT sensitivity) may contribute to scalp hair loss and thicker hair elsewhere.
Genetic Predisposition
Family history matters. If your mother, father, or grandmother experienced female hair loss, your probability of developing the condition increases.
Other Conditions That Can Cause Hair Loss
Diagnosis of Female Hair Loss
Diagnosis is often straightforward when there is a history of gradual thinning on the front and/or top of the scalp, relative preservation of the frontal hairline, a positive family history, and visible miniaturization in thinning areas.
Miniaturization—progressive reduction in hair shaft diameter and length in response to hormones—can be identified using a handheld device called a densitometer. When common causes are ruled out, a broader workup may include blood tests, biopsy, or additional laboratory evaluation.

Types of Alopecia in Women
Your treatment depends on the exact diagnosis. Below are common patterns we evaluate in clinic.
Alopecia Areata: Autoimmune Hair Loss
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss on the scalp, face, and other areas. It can appear in multiple family members, suggesting genetics plays a role.
- check_circlePatchy areata: one or more round patches of hair loss
- check_circleTotalis: complete scalp hair loss
- check_circleUniversalis: total loss of hair on scalp and body
- check_circleOphiasis: wave-like pattern around the scalp border, often the back of the head
Additional Diagnoses We Consider
Beyond androgenetic alopecia, women may experience hair loss due to different hair cycle disruptions, scalp inflammation, or mechanical stress.
