Hair Transplant Step by Step

DHI diagnóstico

What can I expect from a DHI hair transplant consultation?

As soon as you arrive at the clinic, our customer service staff will be waiting for you and will guide you to your scheduled meeting with our Clinic Manager. While you wait to be accompanied to the diagnostic room, you can enjoy a drink. Your friends and family can wait in reception or accompany you to the diagnostic room.

What does a hair transplant diagnosis involve?

Proper and timely diagnosis is the basis for the best treatment of hair loss. For this reason, we provide our patients with a comprehensive, personalized, and in-depth diagnosis. During the diagnostic procedure, a complete dermatological examination of your scalp is performed, as well as records of the quality and density of the donor area to assess the suitability and capacity of the area.

The procedure, explained step by step

Below are key questions about extraction, anesthesia, preparation, implantation, and care.

Hair follicles are selected and extracted one by one from the back of the head using a specially designed disposable tool with a diameter of 1 mm or less. These hair follicles are genetically engineered to never fall out and grow for life. These properties remain after implantation. The hair follicles are then implanted into the scalp using a special tool with a diameter of 1 mm or less. The hair follicles are implanted at a 45-degree angle to ensure that the hair grows in the correct direction.

The local anesthetic used contains 1% lidocaine and a 1:200,000 adrenaline solution, administered to the donor area using a series of small local injections and a very small needle.

The procedure rooms are professionally sterilized, and disposable instruments are used. DHI Panama uses disposable punches and needles for each session, with a diameter of 1 mm or less. Strict protocols are applied to all processes and at all levels to ensure safety.

If you are identified as a suitable candidate for hair transplantation and once you book a session, a detailed set of preoperative instructions will be sent to you.

As soon as you arrive, you will be greeted by our customer service staff, who will accompany you to meet with the doctor to discuss your specific needs, review some necessary documents, and take photographs.

After being photographed, you will be guided to the procedure room where you will be prepared for the session.

The patient is provided with a surgical gown and asked to lie down in a chair specially designed for hair transplant procedures. The doctor will confirm the design and distribution of the hairs, as discussed during the consultation process.

DHI Panama's procedure rooms are equipped with entertainment systems, where you can enjoy music and movies.

Depending on the type of session you have chosen (shaved, unshaved), the in-house beauty salon will cut your hair to the required length.

The extracted hair follicles are kept at a specific temperature (4°C) and in a special solution that improves their growth after placement. We do not separate, cut, or process the clippings to avoid any risk of damage, thus achieving one of the best viability rates in the industry.

Once the extraction phase is complete, the patient is served lunch. If you have any food preferences and/or dietary restrictions, please let us know before the session.

The placement of hair follicles should be such that the top of the follicle is at the surface or slightly above the epidermis, and in no case below it. This condition is practically equivalent to a length of 0.5-1 mm of follicle tissue above the surrounding recipient skin plane.

Hair follicles are implanted one by one directly into the area affected by hair loss using the DHI implanter and without the creation of prior holes, to provide a completely natural result.

Total control of the depth, direction, and angle of placement of each graft provides natural results, maximum viability, and ensures that the implanted hair never falls out and grows for life.

At the end of the session, the physician will carefully inspect the recipient areas to ensure that the placement and positioning of the grafts meet the patient's preferences, and gauze will be placed over the recipient area. Then, the physician will accompany the patient to the diagnostic department, where they will be given post-operative instructions and a post-operative care kit.

The doctor will then accompany the patient to the diagnostic department, where they will be provided with post-operative instructions and a post-operative care kit, which will contain gauze, post-operative medications, and a bottle of saline solution. In addition, photographs will be taken of the patient's donor and recipient areas.

The first complete wash of the donor area should be performed the day after the procedure. The recipient area of the implant should be washed 3 days after the hair restoration procedure. Using an extra-mild shampoo, wash the entire head using circular motions and light pressure. With each wash, the pressure applied should gradually increase to help remove any residual scabs that may have formed. The patient can go to the clinic during the first few days after the session, where the clinic staff can show them how to perform the washes.

The patient may visit the clinic during the first few days after the session, where the clinic staff can show them how to wash their hair.

After the transplant

The new hair gradually grows after the transplant. Some of the transplanted hair is preserved and begins to grow within the first few days after the operation. Some hair may fall out during the next 2 to 6 weeks after the hair transplant.

The progressive growth of new hair follows a process that is completed 8 to 12 months after the operation. The final aesthetic effect is usually achieved after 12-18 months.

We encourage patients to come see us 2, 6, 9, 12, and 18 months after their procedure to monitor their progress. We will send reminders to encourage patients to book their evaluation appointments.

If you are unable to visit us, we recommend that patients send us their photos for an online evaluation.
